 Adjectives

A word used with a noun to describe or point out, the person, animal, place or thing which the noun names, or tell the number or quantity, is called an adjective. 

Examples

.These are beautiful flowers. 




2. Rana has two strawberries. 



Types of adjectives

There are eight kinds of Adjectives:


1  Proper Adjectives 

2  Adjectives of Quality

3  Adjectives of Quantity

4  Adjectives of Number

5  Demonstrative Adjectives

6  Distributive Adjectives

7  Interrogative Adjectives

8  Possessive Adjectives 


1  Proper Adjectives 

Adjectives formed from proper nouns are called proper Adjectives 

Examples 

1  Pakistani food

2  The English language

3 Italian cheese


Adjectives of Quality 

The Adjectives which point out some quality of a person or thing are called adjectives of Quality. 


1. It is a good book. 

2 she is an honest girl. 

3  He is a clever man.

4  The foolish  old crow tried to sing. 

5  is a beautiful colour.

 3  Adjectives of Quantity 


The Adjectives which point out the quantity of a Noun are called Adjectives of

Quantity.

Examples

1  He has lost all his wealth.

2. She didn't eat any meat.

3   My mom has much better. 

 Adjectives of Number 


4  Adjectives of Number include:


Cardinal Numbers as 

one, two, three and so on.

Example

1  I have two hands. 

2  He has two cars. 

Ordinal Numbers as

 first, fifth, seventh, thirteenth, etc

Examples

Sunday is the first day of the week.

Multiplicatives as single, double, triple, two-fold, tenfold, etc.

Example 

He paid double the usual fare. 

Indefinite Number as

 all, some, any, enough, no, many, few, several, etc. Distributive Numerals which refer to each of number as each, every, neither. 

Examples

1  Here are some apricots.

2. There are no pictures on the wall. 


Demonstrative Adjectives

These are the adjectives which show which or what thing is meant as: 

that,these , whose  some, such, etc.


1  This boy is lazy. 


(ii)   That girl is fat.


These children play. 


6. Distributive Adjectives 


The adjectives which show that the things have been taken separately or in separate groups are called Distributive Adjectives.


1. On either side is a narrow lane. 

2  Every student should come in uniform. 

3  Each of the boys was there.

 4. Neither of you turned up.


7. Interrogative Adjectives 


The Adjectives used with Nouns to ask questions are called Interrogative Adjectives. 


(i) Whose pen is this?


(ii) What game do you play?


(iii) Which way would you like to go?

Iv). What manner of man he is ? 


8. Possessive Adjectives 


The genitives forms of personal pronouns used to qualify Nouns are called Possessive Adjectives.


i)  My brother is loyal to his job. 

 ii) One must do one's job. 

iii) She has ruined her health.
