Formula

Subject + had been + V(1)+ ing

1. She had been laughing.
2 He had been eating.
3  They had been running.

 Negative Sentences

Subject + had + not+been+ V(1) + ing.

For example


1  They had  not been reading for two hours
2   She had not been sleeping for five hours.
3.  We had not been constructing the building. 

Interrogative Sentences

Had + Subject + been +V(1) + ing ?

1  Had they been playing football?
2 Had she been sleeping for five hours?

It is used to describe an action which is in progress somewhere in the past and continue until another action .
